The best way to keep your horse happy and healthy is to know his or her habits. Once you really get to know your horse, even the slightest change in behavior can be a helpful red flag for you.
Secondly, you want to allow your horse to live as horses in the wild might live. That means they need the proper kind and supply of food, frequent exercise, inexhaustible fresh water to drink, and companionship.
The care that we provide for horses- the grooming, dressing, etc.- is a kind of "essential bonus" that helps to keep horses in a condition far superior to their natural state.
