Yes, I want the fairy-tale wedding, the wedding I've dreamed of since I sat in the church at my aunt's a wedding when I was six years old. The bride floated down the aisle with a crown on her head, her gown sparkling, walking down a flower strewn aisle. That's going to be me someday, I thought. I'm going to carry a big bouquet of fresh flowers, a dress with a long train and a long veil that is fit for a princess. The dream has stayed with me as I found my Prince Charming, my best friend and soul mate.
While my friends have planned beach weddings in the Caribbean, I want a church wedding. I want the stained glass windows to shine on us as we repeat our wedding vows. I want candles to flicker on the altar and I want all our relatives and lifelong friends to share in our joy. I want the entire church to erupt in cheers when we are pronounced man and wife. I want the big, traditional wedding.
I embarked on a quest to find the dress I'd imagined since I was six. The bridal consultant showed me slinky and sleek dresses, I wanted a romantic dress, full of lace and sparkles. I wanted my shoe to peek out from under a lace trimmed petticoat. She pulled out a white organza ball gown encrusted with crystals and sequins. When I slipped on this dress, I just knew that this dress was the dress in my fantasy. I chose a crystal tiara and a crystal encrusted long veil that looks like fairy dust has been sprinkled on it.
I've always wanted my wedding reception to have lots of flowers, food, friends and dancing.
We choose a band instead of a disc jockey because we want the band to play songs that reflect our family's heritage as well as modern music. I want our grandparents to dance the Italian tarantella. And our first dance will NOT be a choreographed dance to Thriller, rather a slow dance to a romantic love song.
Our reception will have lots of twinkling lights and candles, sweet smelling flowers and an abundant tables full of food. We'll have a 5 tiered white wedding cake with my parent's wedding cake topper and a pastry table laden with sweets. I want all of our families and friends to truly feast with us.
I want my fairy-tale. I'm only doing it once. I'm making it memorable, not just for us as a couple, but for another 6 year old who'll grow up to someday meet her prince.
