Horse grooming tips for show day

Nothing looks prettier or more professional than a well-groomed and polished horse and rider in a show ring. What separates the would-be winners from the top-of-the-line horse show divas is attention to detail, for both you and your horse. Preparation and attention to detail are crucial for your success in the show ring!

Whether you show western pleasure horses or hunter horses or miniature horses, there are several details that need to be addressed long before you step through the in-gate and present your overall turnout to a judge. The more obsessive you are about the little things, the more you will be rewarded in the long run for your efforts. After all, it doesn't matter how well trained your mount is if it has long whiskers, dirty white socks, and a dull coat!

Horse shows are, in a lot of ways, beauty pageants. Long before your show day arrives, you should be thinking about some specific details that will add to your performance. First, your horse needs to be in the best condition possible. The main focus will be on your horse, and the first opinion a judge has of it should be "wow". A well muscled and conditioned animal that is relaxed and well-suited for its task will always catch the judge's eye. Be sure that your horse is on the best feeding program you can supply, and that you've taken all necessary steps to make sure it's in the best health possible before stepping into the show ring.

It's essential for your horse to be as clean as possible on show day. You wouldn't show up for a prestigious dance recital in muddy shoes, with chocolate smeared on your face, and dirt under your fingernails! If you can, try and bathe your horse the day before the horse show. Use a good quality horse shampoo and be sure to rinse thoroughly. Rinsing your horse with a mixture of vinegar and cold water (approximately 1:10 ratio) will not only eliminate dulling shampoo residue, but will also help repel flies as well. Wash the mane and tail thoroughly, and use a good quality conditioner to add shine, vigor and softness. Use a whitening shampoo on any socks, stockings or face markings that need some brightening. While the horse is still wet, finish with a light spray of Absorbine Showsheen, Healthy Hair Care Conditioner spray, Laser Sheen, or any other type of horse shine spray (there are numerous kinds available at horse supply stores). Lightly spray wet tails with a leave-in conditioner, braid from the tail bone down, and put the tail in a sock or tail bag to keep it clean.
