Movie reviews: Over Her Dead Body

Created on: June 24, 2008

Over Her Dead Body is a romantic comedy, comparable to The Wedding Singer. Both movies have star power, wedding incidents, forsaken grooms and airport finales.

Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria Parker portrays deceased fianc Kate. After a tragic accident on her wedding day, she is cast back to earth unclear of her mission. Kate's attempt to sabotage her groom's new fling is a comical journey of the road to salvation. Eva adds humor and passion to her character, making the self-centered, know-it-all diva Kate likeable.

Groom Henry is played by actor Paul Rudd, best know as the character Mike on Friends. Using his classic sarcastic one-line jokes, Henry's character is interesting but void of emotion.

Henry's sister Chloe, played by actress Lindsay Sloane, is an eccentric busybody finding fault in his seclusion. Desperate to see her brother move on with his life, she enlists the help of a psychic caterer Ashley (Lake Bell). Deceiving Henry into believing they have communicated with Kate's ghost, he falls head over heals for the messenger. This is where the comedy begins and Kate decides to rejoin the scene.

Kate embarrasses Ashley with an intercom emergency and appears inappropriately while she is making out with Henry. A loud dirty talking scene erupts in the bedroom when Ashley is trying to ignore Kate's singing. Without argument this scene is the best in the movie and viewers can't help but laugh out loud.

Ashley's deception creates the typical relationship drama, but the overall mood of the movie is positive. With a personality similar to that of Kate's, she is passionate, stubborn, offbeat and complicated. She goes after what she wants in life, with little regard for the feelings of others. It would take an interesting woman to grab Henry's attention and the attraction between the pair is believable.

A side plot includes Ashley's best friend Dan, who is played by actor Jason Biggs. His obsession with Ashley is apparent from the start, even though his character is admittedly gay. Known for his slapstick humor in American Pie, Jason provides a secondary comic relief. His best scene revolves around clumsiness in the kitchen, where he accidentally sets himself on fire.

Over Her Dead Body is directed by Jeff Lowell and is a predictable but surprisingly funny movie. It is the quality of the characters and not the plot that make this film worth watching. The movie is 95 minutes in length and rated PG13 for sexual content and language. Over Her Dead Body is more than a chick flick and can keep a man laughing and interested.
