Sun, you are the overseer of living things,
lighting existence and clarifying nature's beauty;
your work is bountiful and infinite:
the seeds that lie deep and wait for your warm embrace
are woken and stirred into stretching fragile limbs
upwards to touch your face.
Sun, you are the author of wondrous tales,
enticing spreading forests and soft ferny glades,
wide coral reefs and mountain's moss;
tangled seaweeds salute you with waving fronds,
conifer and lichen, tropical palm and dainty bud,
each to your light responds.
Sun, you are the creator of amazing vistas:
as the heatwave of summer scorches and destroys
you console us with scenes of gold and ochre
and brownish hues that surpass the artist's revelation
and when day is done, your crimson and purple shafts
herald cooling night's salvation.
Sun, you are the illuminator of the earth,
you distribute freely and predictably your diurnal radiance
on desert, cragged mountain and rolling plain;
you bestow on all creatures your daily persuasion
to wake, to flourish, to endeavour, to achieve
in a world of amazing creation.
Sun, you are our mentor, teacher, oppressor
without fear or favour sending bushfire, drought, famine;
grass shrivels, crops die, trees burn, deserts survive;
fortitude, endurance and courage are revealed
as new growth responds in time
and in good time, all are healed.
