Dear Friend,
You do not know me but I know you. You have never heard of me but I have heard of you. You are the man in camouflage green. You are the woman in white. You are the army. You are the navy. You are the pilots that fly the planes. You are sons and daughters. You are mothers and fathers. You are wives and husbands. You are friends. You are portrayed in great movies. You are mentioned in the timeless songs. You are the defenders of this land. See, I know who you are.
There are so many things that I would like to say to you, and I do not even know where to start. I cannot thank you for all of the sacrifices that you have made for me. Today as I look back on all of the privileges I have as an American, I have to remember that I have all of those things partially because you fight for me. I can write a million words containing the most elegant vocabulary that I possess, but it still would not express my gratitude for what it is that you do.
It is hard to admit, but for a long time, I never thought about soldiers. I never realized how important what you do actually is. As a child, you were never discussed in my home. As a young adult, with the hustle and bustle of life happening around me, you rarely crossed my mind. It was not until my late teens that I realized that you, and others like you, are irreplaceable.
From the start I did not believe that this war was the best decision. There were a lot of people who agreed with me and a lot of people who did not. No matter what stance anyone took, what you need to know is that we all supported you. When the time came for you to exercise your duty to this country, standing strong and ready, you seemed to have no fear. I know that you must have been weary, and you must have had questions, but you but on that uniform without hesitation, and I marvel at your bravery.
When a see your face on the new all I can do is cry. When holidays pass and more of you are being deployed all I can do is weep for you. As that bus passes by with loads of men in those uniforms all I can do is cheer because you are among the mightiest men that have ever walked the planet Earth.
Fear plays a huge role in my life. I am afraid of everything! I am afraid of failure, success, and any other fear that you could conjure up in your mind. The one thing that I am not afraid of is that you will stop standing up for me. I know that you will. Even when I do not understand why you do it, I know that you can always be counted on. I have every confidence
