Poetry: How do you love someone who doesn't love you?

by Pamela A Mertz

Created on: June 23, 2008

You pretend
that you are just friends.
You don't let him know that
your heart overflows with emotion
every time you talk on the phone.

You act like you have a tickle
in your throat when you are really
getting choked up.

You long for him to come to his senses.

You keep your deepest feelings in check,
for you suspect he may guess the truth
if you said what you really feel.

You consider yourself lucky to have
him in your life at all. You think
about him all the time, and wonder
what might have been if you were
courageous enough to let go and tell
the truth.

They say the truth will set you free.

My truth keeps me prisoner. I love him
so much and he has no idea, because
fear holds me back. Fear that my true
feelings will drive him away.

So, I do the best I can. I relish the
moments we do get, and allow his voice
to fill my heart until next time.
