Food, wine, and music: Three ingredients for a great party. Zee French, zey know how to party! July 14th is Bastille Day, France's Independence Day, and in keeping with a tradition over 100 years old, it is commemorated with boisterous carousing and heartfelt Nationalism.

Paris is at the heart of the celebrations, for it is there that the storming of the Bastille prison occurred in 1789, marking the beginning of the French Revolution. A monarchical government ended and a new Republic was born, embracing the ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity for all French citizens. These ideals are the theme for Bastille Day festivities.

Although the prison was burned to the ground during the revolution, Place De La Bastille or Bastille Square is memorialized as the site where it once stood. An elaborate dance party is held there on the eve of Bastille Day. There is a different theme chosen each year - African music and dance was the 2007 theme. Dancing joyously on the very ground where the symbol of oppression stood is the epitome of liberating. The ghosts of 18th century French citizens no doubt join in the merriment - if they can find room. It's a very crowded affair, but you can find smaller celebrations in just about any bar, pub, or residence. All of France on this night is filled with the sounds of music, laughter, and celebration.

Hopefully no fires break out in the cities on this night or the next, because the local firehouses are busy hosting their own parties in honor of Bastille Day. These are open to the public and include dancing and demonstrations. The hunky firemen, in full uniform, are quite the lure for the ladies.

An outdoor gay ball is another traditional event honoring Bastille Day. This eccentric party is known for being the funniest ball in Paris and promises no dull moments!

If you prefer a more decorous celebration, then take part in the world's largest picnic. What better way to celebrate fraternity then to share baguettes and wine with your fellow countrymen? Dubbed "The Incredible Picnic", this event takes place along the meridian line of France, and extends North and South for over 600 miles. Red checkered tablecloths line the spot where you can break bread with a stranger, as a fellow citizen or guest, in the true spirit of equality.

The military parade begins the morning of Bastille Day and is the highlight of the celebrations. It is the oldest and largest military parade in the world. People begin lining the street early to get a clear
