Hot Springs, AR: Activities and attractions

by Jennifer Bunn

If you have never thought of visiting Hot Springs, Arkansas (or have never heard of it), perhaps I can change your mind.

The Natural State boasts many attractions, but Hot Springs is the number one tourist destination in Arkansas. With a population of around 40,000 people, Hot Springs is large enough to host many attractions, and yet not so large that getting around is difficult. Hot Springs is the boyhood home of former president Bill Clinton and also actor Billy Bob Thornton. (Don't let that keep you away!) Loaded with things to do and places to see, Hot Springs is a great place to visit for the entire family, young and old.

Hot Springs National Park
Hot Springs National Park surrounds the northern edge of the city of Hot Springs. The park contains many scenic hiking trails (26 miles of them, to be exact). Bathhouse Row consists of eight turn-of-the-century historic buildings. Only one, the Buckstaff, is still in operation. The Fordyce has been converted into a museum that contains a visitor center, full of interesting things to see and rich with the history of the area.

Theme Parks
If your family is a big fan of theme parks, Hot Springs should be your first destination for fun. Magic Springs is home to some of the most exciting rides for enthusiasts. Ride the Arkansas Twister, Plummet Summit, and The Gauntlet, to name just a few. If your taste runs to cooling off on a hot day, Crystal Falls Water Park may be your first stop. Home of the Crystal Cove wave pool, the High Sierra Slide Tower, Kodiak Canyon Adventure River, and the newly opened Rapid Falls Raceway (310 feet long!), this water park is one you and your family won't want to miss.

Animal Attractions
Arkansas Alligator Farm and Petting Zoo has been a popular attraction since 1902. Featuring over 100 alligators, they claim not to have lost a tourist yet! You might also want to check out National Park Aquarium, which is host to Arkansas' largest fish and reptile collection.

Music
For the music lovers in the family, Hot Springs boasts a stellar collection of music festivals, featuring lively jazz and blues music. Festivals are free and are held in September of each year. Hot Springs is also home to the Central Country Music Theater, which features the Family Music and Comedy Show, which family members of all ages will be sure to enjoy.

Racing
Since 1904, Oaklawn Park has been a premier thoroughbred racetrack. The whole family will enjoy watching the races. Home to the Racing Festival of the South and the notable Arkansas Derby, race enthusiasts will be hard-pressed to find better racing anywhere!

Hot Springs, Arkansas is a great place to visit for families, with exciting adventures at every turn and surrounded by some truly magnificent scenery. It simply doesn't get any better than that! When planning your next family getaway, put Hot Springs, Arkansas at the top of your list.
