Poetry: Relationships

by Elizabeth Pierce Ritz

A young and playful girl was I
who romped without her shoes
in grass and clover as bees abound
on petals' vivid hues.

The sunlight danced upon my hair
of dark and wavy tresses
as I would wave to butterflies
or twirl around in dresses.

Life was wondrous and oh so sweet
yet I never could have known
the plan of God working silent
within a seed that had been sown.

I watched as Mommy's belly
(on a woman who was slender)
grew so cuddly, big and soft
and she let me touch it tender.

She told me "Watch the baby kick,"
"Here, feel it for yourself,"
wide eyed I filled with wonder
and my spirit filled with wealth.

'Baby any day will come',
such joyous words were said.
I waited all the summer long
while questions filled my head.

Then one hot summer's day
evening, noon or morn,
I don't remember all so much
'cause the baby had been born!

She was a lovely baby girl
who smiled even when asleep
when I whispered "I love baby"
and I fell for her so deep.

Her laughter made such music,
her brown eyes spoke the words
the song she made a melody-
that outsung the nesting birds.

A young and playful girl was she
who romped without her shoes
in grass and clover as bees abound
on petals' vivid hues.

The sunlight danced upon her hair
of dark and wavy tresses
as she would wave to butterflies
or twirl around in dresses.

Sisters our Lord made us
as we played through sunny days
or watched as raindrops gathered
on windows' gray wet haze.

Our lives entangled like a vine
while life took twists and bends,
Sisters our Lord made us,
and faithful loving friends.
