Better gas mileage
How is this article different than all the rest that you have read? It's the advice I would give any one struggling to live and work in today's economy.
There are some applications that seem extreme but could save you a fortune. I'll start with the most common and easiest to do. And progress to the more radical.
You should start by filling your tires to a pressure near or at maximum tire pressure. Wide tires increase the rolling resistance and reduce gas mileage. A taller tire would give you a longer distance for the same turn of one engine revolution but it might cause you to lose gas mileage if the speedometer is part of the computer system and used for fuel calculations a taller tire would most likely cause you to have the speedometer calibrated. The maximum tire pressure rating is on the side of the tire.
Everyone knows a flat tire doesn't roll very well, that is the extreme by the physics still apply.
Next is to keep your air filter clean. Your engine is actually an air pump. This is an easy way to understand that if the air filter is dirty or restricted by design, or damage. Your pump (your engine) will have a hard time getting air into it. You may have to replace your air filter if it cannot be cleaned you should buy an air filter that is high in filtering the air and high in the flow, allowing the maximum amount of air to the (engine). This too is an easy and inexpensive.
The third is to use a fuel additive to clean the fuel injectors or carburetor. I use this at each oil change and on the start of long trips with my first fill up. It will help to clean up you engine and remove water that has developed from condensation in your fuel tanks from running on low or empty fuel tanks.
You could see as much as a 10% increase in you mileage, have had it happen for me.
If your engine has not had the PVC valve cleaned or changed it may become dirty and fail. It is usually not a catastrophic failure but it will give you a red check engine light on many cars and trucks but so can a loose or bad gas cap on your gas tank.
Today when gas has become over four dollars a gallon a good locking gas cap would cost less than a tank of gas that has magically disappeared. Gas caps are part of today's new cars fuel system, close it tightly and replace it if it become damaged or lost.
Other fuel savings can come from using the manufacture recommended oil weight and some savings can come from synthetic oils of the same weight
