Sitting amidst the picturesque Rocky Mountains, Aspen, Colorado is best known for being a premiere winter recreation destination that attracts skiers and snowboarders from around the country. But once the snow melts in Aspen, numerous opportunities for warm weather adventures arise. The rugged landscape and temperate climate, with summer highs averaging in the 70's, creates the perfect environment for all types of outdoor activities.

Water sports abound in the Aspen region. Whitewater rafting is a favorite activity in the Aspen area. The Roaring Fork River offers runs rated from class II to class IV. Experienced rafters can relish class IV and V runs on the Colorado and Arkansas Rivers, just a short drive from Aspen. Canoeing and kayaking can be enjoyed on the Frying Pan River and Castle creek. There are many outfitters in town that provide rentals as well as guided tours, and supply splash jackets and wetsuits. Fishing is also a favorite pastime in Aspen, as the area boasts the best lakes and streams for trout in Colorado. There are plenty of fishing shops in town that will supply gear, offer guides, and give advice.

Hiking and mountain biking are popular activities in the Aspen area. There is an abundance of hiking trails in the area surrounding Aspen, ranging in length and intensity. There are also numerous outfitters in town that offer guided tours important if you're new to hiking in the Rocky Mountains. There are five mountain bike trails, varying in intensity from beginner to advanced. Bikes are not allowed in the wilderness areas surrounding Aspen, so you must stay on the trail. Mid-afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer months, so be sure to bring rain gear. Also bring plenty of water to combat dehydration, which can occur quicker in the higher altitude.

Rock climbing is also a popular pursuit around Aspen. Independence Pass has climb routes for beginners as well as the more experienced climbers. Hiring a guide is always recommended. Paragliding has also become a popular sport in the Aspen area. Tandem pilots certified by the United States Hang Gliding Association are by your side to give instructions and in-flight advice. Camping in Aspen can be done in RV parks with all the amenities or in a rugged backwoods campground for those who want to "rough it."

Aspen definitely has it all. If an outdoor adventure is your ideal summer vacation, this is your destination. Whatever outdoor sport you can dream of, you can do it in Aspen.
