Sometimes I wonder just what would be,
If I'd gone left instead of right;
Or would there be four instead of three,
If I hadn't worked late that night?
Why does one poor soul live in the street,
While others count their riches;
Why many live lives that are so sweet,
And others toil in the ditches?
Is it just fate, or one's destiny,
That leads us down life's winding path;
Is a higher power leading me,
Have the poor provoked His wrath?
Can vast millions be led by only one,
So many forks are in the road;
Is there help to win this race we run,
Will He lighten our heavy load?
Can one shpherd lead so many sheep,
So many lives to make or break;
Still, now as I lay me down to sleep,
I pray, dear Lord, my soul please take.
