Vitamins and your health

Vitamins are essential for optimum health. With the right amount of essential vitamins, minerals and herbs you can hope to live a long and pain-free life.

Unfortunately most of us don't get enough of the essential vitamins and that has led to the plethora of diseases we see around us today. When compared to the RDA as set by our government health experts, we don't even meet their minimum requirements! If your body doesn't get what it needs, it suffers.

While the media and the established medical community promote the need for a good diet and exercise, they leave out one key ingredient; the need for supplementation.

A good diet is certainly necessary, but you're not likely to get it in the produce you buy at your local supermarket. For one thing that produce comes from soil that has been over farmed. What nutrients there are in the food is inadequate. Who wants to chow down 17 bowls of spinach to get the same amount of nutrition that one bowl would have supplied 100 years ago?

As if that wasn't enough that produce has been treated with herbicides, pesticides, coloring and a number of chemicals to keep that food looking fresh. As you ingest those chemicals you are adding a greater burden on your body's ability to purge those chemicals and restore the natural balance of your system.

And finally there comes our lifestyle. Smoking, excessive drinking, eating foods high in fat and sugar add to the insult that our bodies have to cope with on a daily basis.

Is it any wonder that heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's and a number of other diseases plague so many people.

While supplementing with vitamins are an important part in maintaining health, we all need to change the lifestyle that is making us sick. All vitamins are essential despite the reports that come out discounting certain vitamins and minerals as being unimportant.

Whether you are religious or not, the fact is that no one can survive long on a diet of fast food.

So what vitamins should you be taking? This list is far from complete but it lists the essential vitamins that you cannot live without and what they do for your body:

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a molecule similar to glucose and like glucose it needs insulin to get into your cells. While you may not be deficient in this vitamin, it is extremely important for diabetics. Lack of this vitamin leads to poor wound healing, less immunity to infections, excessive bleeding and elevations in cholesterol as well as a depressed immune system.
