The Battle of the sexes has always been apparent in many parts of human nature since the dawn of time. Only in recent decades have women began to earn the same rights and recognition as men in many fields. One of these more recent fields is that of video games. Gaming was (and still generally is) regarded as a male only past time, but lately, a lot more girls have been getting in on the computers and consoles and (more often than you may think) are coming out on top of their male counterparts. Girls across the globe continue to register in gaming competitions, get gaming tattoos, or just simply play their consoles for a little while in their own homes.
While girls continue to increase their ever-strengthening presence in the world of gaming, there are those who resent it. There are still male gamers out there who believe that girl gamers either don't exist, or shouldn't. Of course, on that note, it would also be a mistake to say that there aren't guys out there who downright welcome female gamers, seeing them as advancement for the gaming world.
Gaming was originally coined for entertainment purposes, with little competition, except for the faceless name that beat your high score at the local arcade. As the years have gone by, competitive gaming too has synonymously been moving forward; these days, almost all games are considered competitive in some way, with most recently released games having a multiplayer and just as many having online capabilities. Males are generally considered more competitive and as such, the market seems to be targeted at them; however with girls getting in on the action, gaming markets might just have to change their demographic to suit both genders. While this is already happening on a small scale, it seems that not enough games are designed to visually appeal to females. While Dead or Alive (for example) has plenty of scantily clad, well endowed women in them for the male gamers to look at, there aren't nearly as many male characters designed for that same purpose, the only difference being, they'd be for the female gamers.
Corporations are catching on, gamers are getting used to it and it's just a matter of time before the rest of society follows. On this day ten years from now, it could be the industry has remained the same, or it could be that less people are surprised to hear that females aren't afraid of picking up a controller now and again.
