Memoirs: My beloved dogs

I knew that my precious boy was dying. He never, ever complained. Not the first day we got him, not in between, and not even when he had to be in pain. The veterinarian told me that Chipper had a mass on his liver and it had ruptured, spreading infection throughout his body and said we needed to provide him with a compassionate, merciful passing. I called my husband to come which gave me about 30 private minutes to say my goodbye. I asked the vet if I could take him outside to be alone with him. There was a peaceful, shady spot with a bench to sit on and he so loved the outdoors. Somehow Chipper found the strength to walk through the vet's office with his head held high and his tail curled in that fanned question mark so that no one there would guess that he was not the happiest, healthiest guy in town. As soon as we were out the door, he collapsed and go could no further. I picked him up, carried him to the bench where I gave him my love, my thanks, and my resolve to see him again.

I called Tyler and with the cell phone to his ear, Chipper heard Tyler's voice one final time. I prayed to God that He would have Chipper waiting for me with his tail wagging when I go home and I prayed for the strength I knew I did not have to let Chipper go.

My husband arrived and as we cradled Chipper in our arms, Alan gave him one last belly rub while I kissed him goodbye and whispered our love for him. I was rubbing his head and his eyes almost closed, but that last minute, those tired brown eyes locked on to my sad, tear-filled, green ones. He trusted us as he always had to do what was best for him. As his spirit left his body, he saw, felt, and knew the love, devotion, and gratitude of his family, our last gift to him.
