The music industry can not be held responsible for the moral downfall in the music lyrics. First, that would be censorship, something we as a country fight so hard to keep from being an issue. If we put the responsibility on the music industry, what is to keep them from only subjecting their own personal beliefs? Second,to put that responsibility on the music industry would take the blame away from the general public.
I believe it is the individuals responsibility to decide what is morally acceptable. The ONLY reason why lyrics that is offensive and wrong gets by, is because the people listen to it, and are willing to pay for it. It is because of them, more and more offensive material makes it to the market. We should then blame ourselves for the outcome.
No longer are people being taught that the offensive material is wrong. With the coming rebellious generation having children, they give to their children what they raised themselves on... the morally degenerate music.
It could be argued that the people now are to immature to make the decision as to what is morally acceptable and what is not, taking away their right to choose, and give the power over to the music industry. But I fear that with that, someone with something to say to the people would not be heard if the wrong producer got a hold of it.
So in the end, the power must lie in the hands of the people to make the right choice. If they do not, then we must do it for ourselves. We can not force others to believe the same as we do, that would also take away the rights we fought for in this beautiful country. It would be wrong of use to subject ourselves upon others, just as I don not believe that a book should be banned, I do not believe that music should be banned.
There are safeguards to keep from corrupting the young, such as the parental advisories. The young and the impressionable should not be allowed access to the offensive music. And should the parental unit buy a album for a child that has this warning, then it s their own fault, and they have no one to blame but themselves.
In the end, we must remember that we all have freedom of choice, and that we can not take that away from others, no matter how obvious it may be that the others can not make the 'right' choice. We can only remember out own morals, and stick by them, because just as they have a choice, we can choose not to be affected by the lyrics that we find unacceptable.
