The world's most popular songs

The world's most popular song? This is a hugely debatable topic, especially considering the millions of songs ever produced. Then there are genres of music; which one is the most popular? The truth of the matter is, tastes change on a regular basis, so to specify a most popular genre would be difficult, however, i do believe it possible to single out one song, which undoubtedly, is the most popular in the world.

Aged 17, it is understandable why I prefer to listen to modern day hip-hop or r&b music. In order to choose a most popular song, from this genre of music, i first need to determine my most favourite artist. To fulfill this requirement, I have two words; Kanye West. At the seemingly young age of 29, Kanye West has already won six grammy awards and been nominated for three times this figure. It is fair to say, from the quantity of awards he has won, that Kanye is by far one of the most popular artists, who has originated from the hip-hop industry. For those who are unfamiliar with West's work, I will introduce you to a few titles; 'Diamonds Are Forever', 'Touch The Sky', 'Heard Em Say', 'Roses' and 'Hey Mama', to name but a few. All these titles provide the listener with a formidable soundtrack, great rhythm and clever lyrics. There is one song, however, which i feel is worthy of more credit than any; 'Through The Wire'. In October, 2003, Kanye was involved in a late night accident, which provided him with the inspiration to write his first song. The track reflects upon West's memories of the accident, which left his jaw fractured in three places. The reason why this song, in particular, is one that i feel to be most popular, is the fact that, whilst recording, Kanye had his jaw wired shut, so in theory, he was performing through his teeth, hence the title, 'Through The Wire'. The song shows his fans of a determination, which, in my opinion, is worthy of idolization.
Ok, so i've stated my 'most popular song'. Now, its time to discuss 'the' most popular song, ever. I believe the song to be of a golden era of music; an era that gave us anthems, which we now class as 'ballads'. One song, from this era, which really tickles my spine, every time i hear it, is 'I Will Always Love You', by Whitney Houston. When i was a child, my mother used to play this song, over and over again! I never really understood the meaning portrayed, however, and it was only in the recent months that i've realised the truth of this song. It is unbelievable. The strength of Whitney's voice, the meaning of the words and the potential to be 'song of the millennium', this ballad is, without a doubt, the most popular song, ever. After reaching number one in the UK and US charts, this song, in my opinion, has never been knocked off its throne, at the top of the all time music collection. Whitney gives the song more depth than already initially provided. The strength of the greatest female artist of all time's voice is incredible. Her ability to maintain the same note for unbearable durations is fantastic. The chill that goes down my spine, every time i hear the line, 'And I Will Always Love You', is unbelievable. This song is, without question, the greatest and most popular song, of all time.
It is not fair that anyone can question the statement, "Whitney Houston's, 'I Will Always Love You', is the most popular song of our generation and if not, the most popular song ever produced.'. This is not fair, it's the truth.
