The role of religion in foreign poliy is an interesting subject but nobody dare to declare saying "ours is a Christian or Mulsim or Hindu or Jew country". Every country upholds democracy but nobody wants the kind of democracy what America is trying in Iraq.
In United States religion plays a major role in politics too.
Religious plays a major role in all politics domestically, but when a particular political party comes to power; whole things changes. There is a constitution in place which they need to follow.
Now the question comes; how to do a better foreign policy by considering their domestic promises & public feelings.
If we take case of Israel; everyone agrees Jews suffered alot and they need a separate state where all Jews can live peacefully. But they have made RELIGION as a tool to deal with other countries; which is absolutely not a good thinking in foreign policy.
If we take case of America; America has a double standard policy where they say equality in all religion but they project themselves as Christian nation and supports Israel for their doing in the past against their neighboring countries.
Now Britain; they made by going to war along with America thinking they would get local support. It was one of the drastic mistakes in foreign policy in Britain's history.
India, the largest democratic nation. India's foreign policy NOT TO INTERFERE in others business is a good thing; but locally the political parties failed to bring that democracy. The religion played everywhere to win elections. Foreign policy towards neighboring countries and Africa failed to certain extend when they gave importance to Kashmir issues. India never condemned China for their atrocities in Tibet.
Saudi Arabia; a Islam nation. Their domestic human rights issue never been brought up in international stage because American Administration support. They projected Islam rules as a tool for foreign policy to win other gulf & African countries support.
Libya! In past years Libya attitude towards US was not good. Their foreign policy was based on religion and supporting Palestine cause. Those years they projected themselves as a savior of Palestine but that policy failed because of lack of economical growth.
If there is a foreign policy; it should be the best interest for people living in those countries and to all countries participating in that policy -not- just by considering their country's religious status.
