Role-playing: Character types and the role of the GM

Welcome to the second article in my Aspects of Role-Playing (ARP) series. I have come up with several topics to write about concerning role-playing which have not already been discussed, or need to be expanded to include more accurate descriptions, and so there may be several articles to cover these topics. CHARACTER TYPES
Should you decide to take up role-playing as a hobby, you'll soon come to find out there are many complex considerations to make when selecting the type of character you want to build. However, as a new role-player, you shouldn't worry yourself too much about going with what you know. You're a Human being, and although you've seen Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Superman Returns a thousand times, that does not necessarily mean you would readily fit into any of those roles.

A primary consideration of selecting what type of character you're going to build is the type and scope of imagination you have. Are you wide open to the possibilities of being able to fly, use psionics, have super strength, cast magical spells, or even to be Han Solo? Can you see yourself in the roles portrayed by your favorite heroes, whether through words in a novel or the eyes of the actor on the television or silver screen? More importantly than the previous questions would be this: have you seen yourself as someone else you've never seen on television or in a movie or through the words of a good book?

Each of the questions above is designed in succession to see how much imagination you have. If you answered yes only the the first question, you might want to consider playing a character much like yourself, but with the heroic twist thrust upon them by the world within the game. To the second, yes, you may consider playing a heroic character 'class' above what you understand in the real world, someone with a super ability or two, able to throw magic spells, or act as an extraordinary thief. To the third, yes, the impossible is opened to you and consideration of alternate races and classes are at your fingertips and, with practice, you will be able to make anything work.

All of that having been explained understand that, no matter where you start playing, and like any other worldly experience, role-playing holds a component of growth where, eventually, you will be able to see yourself in the heights of role-playing with a
