Sara felt as if she never fit in. Day after day she went to school, facing the humilation of being picked on by her peer's. She loved nature, reading, singing, and dancing. Getting good grades was always difficult for her. She never had the ability to sit in her seat and study. Her best friend Jill was smart and played feild hockey. They were from two different worlds but something drew them together.
Sara needed a release from emotional pain. Jill needed release from the pressures of school and her mom. When they were freshmen in high school they started drinking together. Drinking led to smoking cigarettes. Smoking cigarettes led to smoking pot. Before either of them knew what was going on a flood gate opened. Two years later they were snorting coke and tripping on acid together.
No matter what these girls always found a way to score more drugs. From driving for an hour and a half, too sleeping with men. It didn't matter as long as they had the fix that burned in there blood they were happy. Parties, sex, and music, that was what life was about. School didn't matter, sports didn't matter, and neither did family. They had each other and that was enough.
One night Sara went to Jills house. Up to Jill's bedroom. There was a guy from school sittinng on the chair by the desk. He was holding a band, a needle, and a spoon. Sara watched as he helped Jill shoot the heroin into her veins. Without realizing what she was saying Sara declared it was her turn. NO, they wouldn't let her shoot up the first time doing herion. So sara took a bump of it. For the rest of the night Sara relaxed and felt the mellow high of heroin.
That was the only time Sara did heroin. After that she started to clean up her act. She stopped doin acid and coke. She still smoked weed and drank, but watched as Jill got addicted to heroin. There was nothing Sara could do to help her friend. Then one day Jill came to her crying, she wanted help. Sara took her hand and led Jill up to her room. The ritual of burning needles began. Sara made Jill burn her own needle and watch it melt in a metal bowl, then he held Jill as she cried.
During the next few months Sara watched Jill shoot up a few more times. They did the ritual of burning needles three more times. Finally Sara had quit drinking and smoking weed. She was soon going to be out of high school and had more to do with her life. Jill kept going back to heroin. It scared her to death watching her best friend of five years go through this. Finally one day Sara had enough. She said to Jill, "Choose me or heroin."
That was the last time that the two girls talked to each other. They lost contact, Jill continued doing heroin and it swallowed her into a world of darkness and pain. Sara ended up going to college, getting a degree in human services, got married, and had kids. The last time she heard of Jill was from the newspaper. The title to the article was, "Homeless Girl Found dead". Sara's eyes blurred with tears, she skimmed the article and three words popped out and glared at her, "herion over dose."
