Are you looking to remodel and beautify the exterior of your home? Try Bahama shutters; they are functional and beautiful. These shutters are wider than other shutters because only one shutter covers each window. Larger windows and shutters can have one or more mullions (the vertical element between the stiles that act as a divider). Bahama shutters are hinged at the top and open outwards providing a charming and functional awning for shade.
Adjustable side arms can be moved to vary the angle to allow you a little or a lot of airflow. Bahama shutters are often used in tropical or coastal regions for storm protection to provide protection from the wind and flying debris but have become a popular choice for any geographical area.
Some companies even offer storm rated windows appropriate for your region such as Miami/Dade and Florida county codes. Ask about this feature when ordering.
Homeowners can buy standard and custom Bahama shutters easily online, most shutters will last at least ten years and warranties are often available. You can buy shutters painted in a wide variety of colors.
Try bright punchy colors for a more tropical feel or use muted colors for a more traditional look.
Want to paint the shutters yourself? Shutters can be ordered primed and ready to be uniquely painted by you so get creative!
Bahama shutters are easy to install. Commonly used tools are a hammer, electric drill and measuring tape, stuff any handyman or woman has in the toolbox. Instructions will come with your shutters or search for installation directions on the internet. Most installations can be done in five to seven steps per shutter.
Bahama shutters are available in fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood-species commonly used are pine, cedar, and California Redwood.
Crafted wood Bahama shutters can add charm to the exterior of your home, for your enjoyment or for re-sale. Fiberglass and aluminum do not warp, corrode and they resist rotting and damage from insects. Aluminum shutters are a cost effective and comparatively lightweight option. With all these options you are sure to find the right color and material to suit your needs.

Here are a few helpful hints. When measuring measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the window and then use the smallest measurement for your shutter width. Mark or pre-drill holes for proper alignment and remember not to over tighten the screw as this will cause a dimple in the shutter. To deflect rain make sure the louvers face away from the house when the shutters are closed.
Once shutters are installed, pour yourself a cold drink and admire for years to come!
