up some confidence in your skills as a comedian, you will need to begin marketing yourself. This means pitching your routine to comedy club owners and landing gigs at their clubs. Basically you need to get your name out there to as many comedy club and bar owners as possible and this will likely involve making many cold calls on the phone and in person. Once you get your foot in the door and establish yourself as a competent funny man(or woman)your reputation will start to speak for itself and it will be much easier to get second and third gigs at clubs.
It will be necessary to have a regular day job to pay the bills when you first start out. You can devote your evenings and weekends to the comedy circuit and, if you find success, only then should you think about quitting your day job. Comedy can be a fickle business and if the economy takes a sudden turn for the worse then most people won't have the extra money to spend at comedy clubs. All good reasons to hold onto that day job until you land a permanent job in comedy. Permanent comedy jobs can run the gamut from becoming a comedic radio personality to hosting your own television talk show like Ellen Degeneres or Connan O'brien. Another possibility is to become a comedic actor like Mike Myers or Jim Carey. Almost all of these comedians started out doing stand-up routines at clubs and bars and this is still the most tried and true method for building a career in the funny business.
