Bermuda shutters, aka Hurricane shutters, are shutters that are installed to protect homes and other buildings from damaging weather conditions, such as storms or hurricanes. Bermuda shutters are usually made from either aluminum or steel. A lower cost version would be made from plywood.
1. Security
Bermuda shutters are installed to prevent the glass in the window from breaking. If you live in an area that is prone to violent crime, law enforcement highly recommends that one should install hurricane shutters. They can protect not only your home, but you and the members of your family.
2. Storm protection
Hurricanes, storms, etc. are all known to damage homes, vehicles, outdoor equipment and the like. The shutters are, as stated earlier, designed to prevent the window from breaking.
3. Improved Curb Appeal
Hurricane shutters lay flat against the window, giving one's home a sleek, modern look. If you install Bermuda shutters, it increases the curb appeal by adding extra security to the home, extra storm protection, and making the home's windows look newer and more reliable.
3. Energy Savings
Bermuda shutters are wonderful at trapping in heat or coolness, or in other words, a good insulator. This can add to your energy and heat savings. Not only will it save you money, it can help in the fight against global warming. I encourage people to do as much as they can to fight the good fight.
4. Types
The types of shutters I've seen include Accordion, Colonial, Bermuda, and Roll Down. The benefits of the accordion type are that they're permanent, so no extra storage and some brands contain a key, to further prevent break ins. The cons of accordions are they look bulky on some kinds of houses and they glide on wheels, which can be easier to break. Colonials are known to be more stylish, but some also require a bar, which can increase installation problems. Roll Downs are considered the best in theft protection and are also permanent. Though, they are the most expensive. The price ranges from $30 to $55 per square foot. www.weatherguardshutters.com have nice shutters and gives many examples and diagrams on the usage of the products. Some models of roll down shutters offer a battery operated roll down control, which can be useful to elderly or handicapped individuals.
Bermuda shutters are easily purchased online, at either local home improvement shops or larger corporations. Just do your research and specify what type, brand, and model you want.
The shutters seem to be a breeze to install, taking a short period of time. Most have track wheels and go on with screws and the normal ingredients in installation.
