Arguably one of the most important topics that we face in the digital age with so much being stored on and used from computers everywhere for just about everything whether it be a company, a group, or an individual.
When it comes to this subject, I have a loose analogy which I use, put quite simply, think about things like this. You would not obviously in your right mind leave your credit cards and or hard earned cash, bank statements lying about in a place like in your vehicle or around your house in a place where they could be easily lost, stolen, or get destroyed, so why do it with the important data that is residing on your computer.
And in all reality, since everything on the computer is translated into data, it is all usually of unique importance to you, whether you are like me and collect large amounts of music for your personal library and catalogue all of it for long term enjoyment and storage or for other uses, or you create important documents used for work purposes, or have maybe hard to find programs or games, photos and need to keep them backed up in more than one location in case something ever happens to your computer or your hard drive takes its eventual fall as do all mechanical devices at some point or another.
In my case, I have a brand new laptop, purchased about 3 months ago, which is a pretty nice computer, I recently acquired an Acomdata external USB 2.0 Hard drive which I plug into my notebook once a day and have a separate folder just for backing up all of my music I download or rip from CD's, and copies of rough drafts of articles that I write, backups of email's, and just about everything else.
This is actually a very smart thing to do, especially if you live in a place like North Texas where tornados are a very real and very nasty threat at times during the spring and summer months and you typically have to be ready to evacuate at a moments notice if the weather becomes severe enough. This is another good reason why I have an external hard drive, and keep copies of everything I download and do on the laptop backed up to it, so that in the event of a fire or other emergency which would require me to have to evacuate from my house in a hurry and not have enough time to gather up the laptop with its cables etc., I can grab the hard drive and take off with it, and it still has all of my important personal files copied onto it so that I can still retrieve them later on and nothing is lost.
Yes, typically it is an even smarter thing to backup
