Poetry: Night

"Walking in the Night."

The sky begins to darken over this sleepy town.
The street lights like halos shining down.
The pavement is wet with a summer's rain.
The traffic humming like blood in my veins.

This is when I like to venture into the world.
Just a lone person, amongst the furl.
I smell the steam rise from the asphalt, a delicious array.
I am an anonymous stranger, roaming like a stray.

No one sees me in the shadowy street,
The hour is late and everyone is sound asleep.
My mind wanders and my soul is peaceful at last.
I think upon my future, my present, and my past.

I stroll through these quiet hours of the night.
I am like a bird who's taken flight.
Free and careless after a maddening day.
This is my time to drift away.

The world takes on that morning haze.
I know I must succumb to the day.
As the light begins to creep back into the sky.
I make my way home, by and by.

Though I must live in the light.
My heart truly belongs to the night.
