2008: Is this a great time to own a franchise business?

A good time to own a franchise business? Yes and No. Although there is less and less competition from independant and local businesses, there is more and more from other franchises.

A prime example of this is the KFC franchise. KFC had the foresight to get into China right before the Chinese economy boomed and has been reaping the rewards ever since. I know that this is just fast food and it is a world away but, I have always found that the best way to judge a nations economy was to look at that nations source of sustainance. What better example than fast food.

In America, over the last eight years, small business have been dwindling and there are very few people ready to risk there nest egg on there own business and would rather purchase a franchise and have the advertising clout of a brand name and the financial stability to have something to fall back on, just in case the economy goes even deeper in the tank.

This is not altogether a good thing. Of course if you own a large franchise, it is a GREAT thing. It enables you to raise your franchise fees and prices on your respective stores. Due to the increased competition for your stores you will also have more play with the rules and can be as strict as you would like to be with your franchisee. If you are able to make certain stipulations to your franchisee, the sky is truly the limit.

Of course, if YOU are the one looking to buy in, the paragraph above may not be too uplifting. The truth is that the economy is in the tank and it will take investors like you that are willing to take a hit from the big fish, with there increased fees and other strict measures and from the little fish, with soaring labor prices, to turn it around.

To sum it all up, there is no easy answer. Before you decide to mae any kind of commitment, I hope that you are able to research the franchise and also the area in which you hope to start your franchise at. There are many other things to consider, from loan rates to crime rates and from start up fees to parking fees, do your homework and listen to someone with more experience and you should be fine.
