Under no circumstance do I feel a maximum age limit for driving in the US should be enforced. I do feel, however, that regular testing should be done for sight and rules of the road for people of all ages, not just those over a certain age. I must admit that even I, in my early 30's, don't remember all the rules of the road that I learned when I got my driver's permit at age 15.

There are many times when driving that certain traffic situations do not come into play and as a woman with a lot on her plate, if the situations don't happen often enough to enable me to remember the rules then, unfortunately, I tend to forget! I do not feel that I am alone in this regard. Therefore, I feel once you get your license at age 16 or whenever, you should be tested for sight and other such factors every 3-5 years. It should be required every time you need your license renewed, no exceptions.

It may seem silly and redundant; however, there are unfortunate situations when a person in their 30's or 40's might develop changes in their health that can make them a detriment on the road. It is sad, but it does happen and I think to avoid some of the unfortunate mishaps that occur on the road, regular testing should be done. I think this is a great alternate to just taking the license away at a certain age.

It is quite unfair to think that once I reach a certain age, all of my freedom and privileges of personal travel will be taken from me. I would much rather succumb to regular testing when my license renewal period comes up, although it might seem like a hassle it will be worth it in the end when I am able to pick up and go whenever I please. I think many would agree.

On that same token, if I reach the age of 55 and take the renewal test and fail due to poor sight or lack of knowledge of the rules, I will respectfully forgo my rights and hand my license over. I do not want to be a danger on the road to myself or any others. There are too many times you read in the paper about someone with poor sight running into walls at the supermarket with their car! Worse yet, you also hear stories of people running into someone riding a bicycle in the bicycle lane or a kid on roller blades, many times causing severe injuries or even death. I think with regular testing, these terrible accidents could be avoided or at the very least, greatly diminished. Then, we can start working on all those darned drunk drivers out there.
