Many people consider the kitchen table to be the center of their home; the place where the family eats, drinks, talks, and plays. That it is what it was like at my Aunt Bessie's house. When my family moved over from Scotland to Toronto we lived with my aunt and uncle for a few months. The kitchen table definitely was their central gathering place. The dining room table was only for Christmas.
When it comes to choosing a kitchen table you have to think about what its function will be. If you are a single person who mostly eats in front of the television, a small cafe set with two chairs will probably be enough for you. A couple with no children who have friends over for breakfast once in a while would probably invest in a table big enough for four. A family of three children, a mom, and a dad who use the kitchen table all day long to eat, do homework on, and play on will want a table that seats at least six.
The size of your kitchen is also something you have to consider when buying a kitchen table and chairs. You don't want to have to cram your kitchen table into a corner where it is hard to get to. My Aunt Bessie had about 8 family members living with her at the time we moved in and her kitchen table sat 8 normally but she could squeeze in a couple of more if need be. Her kitchen was large enough to accommodate this table comfortably.
After all the considerations about size and function, next you will want to consider how the style of the table. You will want a style that fits in with the style of your kitchen; you don't want your kitchen table to "stick out like a sore thumb." There are some very nice cafe or bistro sets that will add some style and class to your kitchen; sets that make you feel that you are eating in a fancy coffee shop or restaurant. I also like the look of "retro" kitchen tables; the ones with the vinyl top and chrome legs. The kind of tables you see in some roadside diners. Many people like a country kitchen and they choose a wooden table that reminds them of a farmers table.
Shopping for any furniture can be very daunting when you see the vast array of possibilities; shopping for a kitchen table and chairs is no different. However, if you keep in mind how many people will need to use it, the size of table that your kitchen can accommodate, and the style that will fit your kitchen best, it will be a much easier and more pleasant task.
