Easing the burden of summer: Allergy asthma medication

early 1960's. HEPA is short for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance. Generally HEPA has a standard efficiency of 99.97% at .3 microns. Translated this means that it removes most things up to .3 microns in size. Interestingly I learned that .3 microns accounts for much of what we inhale and that can also be absorbed into our blood stream. There are some who also state that there is an 'Accumulation Effect' from ingesting air-borne particles as they accumalate in our lungs over time. It is believed that if some individuals have a lower tolerance then they can develop allergies or other effects from these particles that they have breathed-in over time.

I installed a central HEPA filtration system in my home 7 months ago. The system simply runs the air though a unit that recirculates the air. The effect so far seems to be better sleep, minimal headaches and a generally healthier life. Pollution outdoors may not be avoidable but at least there is something that can be done about indoor air quality.

Other things that can be done include;

Reduce the use and reliance on chemicals in the home.
Read and follow instructions on products
Never mix or combine products as the chemical reaction may be adverse
Only open widows when absolutely necessary
Use 'Green' products that are safe and proven
Children consume more air than adults, try to reduce their exposure to harmful products
Change your furnace or air-conditioning filters regularly
If possible, install a central air filtration system in your home HEPA is recommended

There are no guarantees that these things would arrest anything that has already started. I could however make a difference over time. We all have to live and breath and perhaps some simple adjustments could make things a bit easier for all of us. Each of us is different and has different tolerence to the pollutants that we are exposed to. If you or someone in your home suffers from a breathing ailment then perhaps some simple adjustments can improve the quality of life!
