Well they finally did it! From that day he was found cowering in a hole many more people have died whilst they decided what to do with him. If they had thrown a grenade down that hole would it have saved a lot of time and lives? Well we would be 2 years further down the line from where we are now. The Shia and the Kurd's have there revenge and the Sunni's have their martyr.
Was executing him the right thing to do? It certainly sends a message out other dictators but what is the message? Is it comply with the will of the world or be more ruthless and destroy my enemies before they destroy me? I feel he should have been made to live out his life in the Hague under lock and key.
Saddam was left in charge of Iraq in 1991 as it was felt he was the only man strong enough to hold the 3 rival factions together in some form of unity. This was required to keep the regime in Iran held back. Now I feel that whatever the UN does and no matter how much money is thrown into Iraq the country will split into 3 sections along their ethnic lines. The Sunni's will be helped out by Syria, the Shia by Iran and the Kurd's by the UN as they have had UN protection since 1991. It will take a great man to unite these people.
Saddam paid the ultimate price but his people will be paying for decades to come.
All this came about because Saddam had decieved the entire world since 1991 that he still had Weapons of Mass Destruction. This deception allowed Saddam to keep pressure upon rebelious factions within Iraq and detter Neighbouring countries from waging war upon Iraq. In this time of international terrorism the UN could not risk these WMD's to possibly fall into the hands of terrorists.
This deception was pretty clever in that he built suspicious facilities, denied international experts access, purchased high tech equipment and basically bluffed the world. Saddam didn't need to actually carry out the work just let everybody believe it was happening.
Unfortunately Saddam kept this deception going too long. The US called his bluff! Had Saddam quietly informed the US that it was all a bluff and let his facilities be examined in secret he may well still be in power. Thousands of people would still be alive Sunni, Shia, Kurdish, US, UK... the list could go on. If only he had complied.
Hopefully I am wrong and the Iraqi people will become tired of the violence and inform on the insurgents. Once the killings stop all the troops can go home and the Iraqis can once again live in peace and prosper!
