Solar power can greatly reduce dependence on foreign oil and aid in correcting green house emissions while securing the basic needs of families such as heat, water, and refrigeration and also ensure necessary utilities during power outages. Although solar power is fast becoming a popular alternative there are a few things to consider before taking on the project of integrating solar power.
Project Necessity:
Those who live or build in remote locations come out far better and cheaper opting for solar power rather than having the utility company provide lines to their home. If you want the peace of mind of being self sufficient in terms of power needs or the helping of the environment, remember that proper maintenance of these systems are a must in order to supply the correct flow of needed power to your home.
Project Time and Expense:
Project time and expense for installation of solar power varies with the system wanted and/or required. If you remain tied to the grid and use your system only for back up or "selling power" back to the utility company, your system will be relatively low, $3,000 to $6,000 with installation time only a day or two. Off-grid systems are more expensive, running between $10,000 and $ 23,000 depending on the size of the system. Installation time is a few days.
Inconveniences are low except for contractors installing the system, which is a small price to pay with these solar power systems adding value to your property and the zeroing out of utility bills with low operating costs.
The fastest growing design of solar energy is the grid-tie system, which generally consist simply of:
- Solar Panels
- Mounting structure, (unless integrated)
- An inverter
This system is used for backup power or "selling power" back to the utility company, which requires the utility company's approval.
Although some of solar systems can be self-installed, it is highly recommended that a licensed solar system contractor professionally install your system in order to get the best performance with smooth operation and no damage or surprises. Contractors schooled in solar systems are found in every area of the country and can be found via the Internet.
