When people ask what I would like for Christmas, or a birthday, I sigh a bit and answer them that I am not picky, I like surprises. In truth I feel sad when they ask because anyone who knows me very well knows the kinds of things I like; what I read, what I collect, what my hobbies are. So it makes me kind of heartbroken when they have to ask what I might want.
In all honesty the very best gift I have ever received is TIME. I have a very dear friend who gives me a lot of her time. She listens to my problems, offers suggestions, gives all sorts of advice, but most importanly she is there and she never complains when I phone, though she knows it usually means an hour or sometimes more, of her TIME. She laughs with me, cries with me, and wipes my tears as well. No gift I could give in return would ever equal the value of the one she has given me.
