Bangs are a trendy way of adding flair to a hairstyle. They can be worn in several different ways to accent your face or simply make an expression. However, bangs can be high maintenance, needing trimmed every few weeks. But who wants to go pay the money for a haircut when all your bangs need is a little snip snip? Here is a few tips for keeping that fresh out of the salon look and keeping your bangs in check.
When your bangs start getting a little long, grab a comb, scissors and a mirror. Stand in front of the mirror and comb your bangs straight down. Look up in the mirror and decide how much you want to take off. A rule of thumb in cutting bangs, is to cut bangs dry, hair shrinks up when its dry, so you will get the full effect. When you've decided how much you're going to trim, gather up your bangs together and twist them a few times. By twisting, this will help to avoid having a straight line of bangs. Grab the twist of hair and your scissors with your spare hand. Take a deep breath, and snip right below how long you wanted your bangs to be. Cut the twist straight across. Hair will bounce up a little bit, so by cutting below it should look exactly the length you wanted it. After that, take the comb and comb your bangs straight down. If you missed a few stray hairs, snip them at an upward angle. If your bangs are not short enough, repeat these instructions untill your bangs are just right. Remember, you can always cut bangs shorter. If you make a mistake and cut too much at once, there is nothing you can do. Its always best to cut just a little at a time.
Also, if you have a cowlick or patch of hair in your bangs that grows funny or a little different than the rest, make sure that you keep that in mind. By keeping bangs a little longer, it may weigh down and help disguise the cowlick. By cutting bangs shorter, the cowlick may become more noticeable, causing your bangs to go every which way. Also, by cutting hair dry, you see how your hair is naturally and the way your bangs normally go. By wetting down bangs, hair is weight down and a cowlick can be hidden.
If you have a very steady hand and a lot of faith in your hair cutting abilities, comb your bangs straight down. Then take the scissors and snip in an upwards angle every few inches. This will help to create seperation in your bangs so it won't look like one big block of bangs. This will also give you more of a wispy look, depending on how much hair you want to cut.
These methods are highly effective for in between bang trimmings. Trust your hairstylist to make any major hair or bang changes, you definetely will avoid a major hair disaster that way. Save money and perform trims yourself, its easy and cheaper than paying for a salon cut.
