Poetry: Panic

Frequent Visitor

In darkness
The moon's silhouette
Shines through tree branches
Casting an eerie glow

This is the place
Where the moon will haunt

A night of no stars
Leaving patched outlines
Of black clouds
Hovering mysteriously

In thick blackness
A lone wolf cries
A sound tracing shivers
Up the spine

A night where fright
Claims its name
Beyond nature
Something looms
In the breeze

A shotgun raised
A sudden blast
Kill the trees
Shoot the moon

The rustle of leaves
Heavy breathing
Unearthly echoes

The moon buries its face
Misty fog descends
Knocking the wind
To stillness

In sheer blackness
A shotgun waits
A small flashlight
Scanning the forest
Penetrating eyes
Quickly shifting
Erratic heartbeat
Sweaty palms
Finger ready on the trigger
One deep breath two three.

The silhouette appears
Huge
Edging the forest

One shot two three
The smell of smoke l-i-n-g-e-r-s

The moon clears the clouds
Showing its face once again
The figure is gone

Slowly the gun is released
From gripped fingers
He stumbles weak
Falls
A heart scared
Frightened to death
At what could not be seen

The moon moves back to hiding
Afraid too of its own shine
