The morning sunlight danced upon the clear blue of the Lake.
Hark! cacophonous chirping of the birds
As they slowly awake
A slumbering world deep
In sleep,
A state of calm repose,
A state near death: how does God manage THAT, do you suppose?
Silver fish leaping through the air...
Blue gills, wide-mouth bass
Leave ever-widening circles upon
This sea of glass.
A mallard dives beneath the surface-searching for a breakfast bite.
It isn't long before he has a juicy fish in sight!
The campers' bacon sizzles, the coffee perks,
The smells awake
My senses as the dawn breaks
Along the peaceful shore.
Folks here say this is as close as you can get
To Heaven's door.
This is a land of sugar cane, of gators, lizards, snakes.
Yet peaceful moments await upon the shores of this vast lake.
Egrets, sea gulls, turtles, fish and near-extinct manatees
Grace the waters and the shores of great Lake Okeechobee.
As the gentle lapping of the water soothes my frazzled, worried mind
I begin to feel the peace and comfort I long have sought to find.
The wild life and raw nature here
Put you in touch with God and
Really all you need to have is a cane fishing rod
To rest your mind and body,
And soothe your every care.
A peaceful sanctuary in this world today...that's rare.
So cast your caution to the wind! Come and sit awhile
Upon the shores of this tranquil lake
And leave here with a smile
Can you hear God's voice? you'll know it
If you listen hard and long, as you
Embrace the lullaby of Lake Okeechobee's song.
