As a recovering anorexic, I know the value reading other stories about anorexics can have. I have been able to reach a better understanding of the issues that underlie my anorexia through reading about other anorexics.
One book, "Starving" by Christie Pettit, is a good example of how a story about an anorexic can help other women recover. This book portrays a young woman in the throws of her anorexia and how she used her faith in God to recover from self-starvation.
Anorexics who decide to read books about other anorexics should consider what aspects they are looking for in a story about anorexia. I think it is particularly helpful for anorexics to read about recovering or recovered anorexics in order to gain hope that they, too, can recover from the condition. I believe the more closely an anorexic can relate to the author of the book and her experiences, the more helpful the story about anorexia will be to the suffering anorexic.
