The role of a manager is complex and wide in today business environment. It is said that a manager wears many hats with different role play in his daily job task. He needs to be multi tasking with good business acumen and a flair for figure and planning. He is also required to be multi-disciplined in order to understand various job functions and to lead and control his subordinates in carrying out their daily job activities. Knowledge of technical matters is a plus point, combined with that of his administrative and supervisory skill in his management role (if the nature of his job required him to possessed technical knowledge in order to perform his job efficiently)
A successful management role is the process of planning, organizing, leading and controlling the work of his subordinates and of using all available resources available at his disposal to reach stated company/organizational objectives. The manager therefore is responsible for directing the efforts aimed at assisting company/organization achieve their goals. A good manager is indispensable for the effective running of an organization for without effective management the organization is likely to founder.
Planning
Manager need to have goals, actions and management activities planning and schedule with set target and time frame. Plans provide the organization objectives and set up the optimum method of attaining them. Plans are the guides by which:
i) The organization obtains and utilizes the resources to meet its objectives
ii) Organization members follow the plan in carrying out their activities to meet the organization's objectives
iii) The progress and results of the activities towards the objectives are monitored and measured in accordance to the planning. If progress is unsatisfactory corrective actions or remedial actions can be taken to address the weaknesses.
Organization
The manager needs good organization skill in order to be effective in his management of the organization and to be successful. This includes arranging and allocation of work, authority, and resources amongst the organization's members so that they can achieve the organization's objectives.
Leading
This is another vital ingredient and aspect to becoming a successful manager. This involves motivating, influencing and directing employees to perform essential tasks.
