The best summer solstice garden tours in the US

We often fail to recognize the blossoms able to survive the hot sunny days throughout the summer solstice. Unfortunately these plants do not have the luxury of seeking relief from the heat that we humans have with indoor air conditioning. Why not pay homage to these seasonal phenomenons this summer? Garden tours abound throughout the season in all regions of the U.S.

For western residents and visitors, the Huntington Botanical Gardens located in San Marino, California is a must see. The gardens, which span 120 acres, include six distinct themes: the Chinese Garden, Shakespearean, Children's, Rose, Herb and Desert. This time of year you will be able to see blooms of the Pomegranate, Pineapple Guava, Matijila Poppy and Trumpet Vine. But the most impressive sight is the vast array of succulents and cacti, some over 30 feet tall and 100 years old. Should your plans permit, I recommend you visit Huntington the weekend of June 28th when the annual cactus show and sale is taking place. To capture the full appreciation, their garden tours are limited to only 20 guests but are available multiple times Tuesday through Sunday of each week.

One of the best kept secrets in the Deep South is Bellingrath Gardens, located near Mobile, Alabama. Opt for the gardens and "Southern Belle" river cruise package. This will ensure full exposure of all plant species able to survive the south's humid weather conditions. The colorful summer flowers of the red Hibiscus, blue Plumbago, pink Pentas and orange Zinnias are sure to open your eyes. These vivid images can only be calmed down with a Mint Julep; ask your southern belle tour guide where this concoction can be found at a nearby bar or dining establishment. If possible try to visit on a Wednesday during the months of June and July. Their "Wonderful Wednesday" program features either a specific gardening presentation by one of their horticulturist or a special event for children.

If you are a Midwesterner or wish to visit the area, Cleveland, Ohio has a variety of Summer Solstice garden tours on June 21st and 22nd. On the 21st, Cleveland Heights is sponsoring their third annual Summer Solstice tour. There are seven self-guided gardens to meander; one of which will convince you momentarily that you are in the heart of France instead of the great state of Ohio. The following day, the Shaker Historical Society is offering a tour of eight gardens, all in close proximity to their museum. There is no doubt that you will be green with envy at the Shaker's meticulously laid out vegetable and flower gardens.

Should you be visiting or reside in the eastern region of the U.S., the White House is offering their annual summer educational guided tours of the South Lawn, Jacqueline Kennedy Garden plus the Rose and Children's Garden. George Washington initiated the planting of the magnificent trees found in the South Lawn; where these days the annual Easter egg hunts are held. The Jacqueline Kennedy Garden is where the variety of regional perennials and manicured hedges can be found. And, while on the tour, you are sure to recognize the Rose Garden where many president speeches and announcements are televised. Dates are limited however to June 14th, July 12th and August 9th; be sure to arrive early to secure a space. Even though admission is free, tickets are limited.

If you have yet to make plans this summer season, I suggest you incorporate all four visits as a Summer Solstice vacation or schedule four long weekend trips throughout the months of June, July and August. Each area offers a historical museum with more than ample dining and other entertainment close by.
