Organizing a Father's Day brunch is easier than you think and can be done almost at the last minute depending on how large a group you are inviting. For argument's sake let's say that you are inviting your children, all of whom live either in your house or nearby and your in-laws and your own parents.
First, simply call everyone up an appropriate amount of time in advance and tell them to mark the day for brunch at your house. Ask them to arrive a half hour before you are planning on serving, because there is nothing great about cold eggs.
Next, plan your menu. While exotic dishes may be impressive to prepare, my take on this is to keep it sumptuous but simple. It has to be sumptuous because Father's are men and well, men like food and usually lots of it. It should be simple because you don't want to spoil the day with a flat soufle` or duck that won't crisp. My favorite brunch for special occasions is so easy anyone can accomplish it.
A honey baked ham, either the spiral sliced kind you can purchase or go all out and buy a large ham and baste for a couple of hours. My family prefers the later because the men love leftover ham later in the day. Add to the menu two or three different quiches - yes, real men eat quiche - either purchased pre-made or make them yourself, it's easy if you have the skills; a large amount of easy home fried potatos, plenty of good bagels and a variety of cream cheese spreads, sliced nova scotia lox, and a homemade fruit salad that can be prepared the night before. Voila! Easy Father's Day Brunch.
Next, think about your decor. My best suggestion is don't over do it. Think in terms of the table looking nice and a way in which you can make it special for Father's Day. If there are young children involved, either grandchildren or your own, you could have them make the placemats for the table. Another idea would be to find a favorite photo of each dad in attendance and have mugs made for their place settings. Whatever sport is the favorite family sport to watch or play can play a role in the decorations.
If your family gives gifts on this holiday, take care of those at least a week ahead of time. Nothing could be more stressful than running to the nearest drug store for cologne while you're baking the ham. Handmade gifts from the young children are a nice touch, the older children are on their own.
A few days before call the guests to remind them what time to be at your house. Make sure you have all your brunch ingredients and relax. Follow this simple and easy way to organize a Father's Day Brunch, the fathers will be delighted and it will be a no stress event for the host or hostess.
