Rather than turn your life upside down learning to live with MS, turn the tables and make it live with you! Before you were diagnosed your life was probably not just about being a patient, and it should not be now.
Accepting that changes and adjustments may be necessary as a result of this diagnosis is certainly a wise move. But it does not mean you have to change your whole life today! Changes and adjustments occur in every life, no matter what. Time has that effect on all of us. At this point, the majority of medical professionals will prescribe the standard medications with the standard less than optimistic view of your future. No need to go into a tailspin.
After the initial shock subsides, remember that you are stronger than you realize. You are still a rational, thinking person. Don't start making decision out of fear. Fear is your enemy now. It will cripple you not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Evaluate every decision you make to ensure that fear is not your guiding force. The results of overriding unreasonable fears will bring you a much fuller and happier life.
Do everything in your power to keep your body strong. Exercise in whatever capacity you can. This disease will do its best to weaken your muscles, so fight back by keeping them as strong as possible. The added benefit of exercise is an emotional boost, the release of endorphins, which make you feel good about yourself. Endorphins are defined by Dictionary.com as substances produced by the brain that have painkilling and tranquillizing effects on the body. Whatever your current state of health, couldn't we all use a few of these warm and fuzzy feelings?
Additionally, understand that knowledge is your greatest weapon. Arm yourself with knowledge about staying well rather than about being sick. This includes eating well. Many, many, many of the vitamin and mineral deficiencies that weaken our bodies can be addressed and overcome through a healthy diet. This isn't hard. Every season of the year has its own abundance of fresh, healthy food. Learn to take advantage of it.
Another major priority is sleep. Currently, our society is constantly on the go and frowns upon periods of rest. Get over that! Deep, restful sleep allows your body and brain to achieve maximum function. Lack of deep, restful sleep will have your body and mind functioning in slow motion. Sleep is also a time of healing and restoration for our bodies. It is very much like recharging your batteries.
Above all, always remember that you are in charge of your life. Don't let life just happen to you. You don't have to be sick because somebody said you were. Be well.
