It's important that children of aging parents help Mom/Dad lead happy fulfilling lives. Aging parents may not have the drive and responsibilities they once had but they can find meaning in their lives and enjoy their twilight years.
A recent article in the AARP magazine reported the secrets of longevity, based on research reported in National Geographic, 2005. The study included 200 Centenarians living in Costa Rica, who were interviewed to exam their lifestyles and unlock the key to how they have lived 100 plus years and still feel content. Some of the lifestyle choices the Centenarians have made may be applicable in efforts to encourage aging parents to lead fulfilling lives.
All of the Centenarians had a defined purpose in life. Try to persuade older parents to mentor or volunteer, using skills from their previous vocation. Now that time permits, they can develop and expand on a hobby. Maybe they would like to give back now. Libraries, hospitals and non-profit organizations always need volunteers. Older men and women may consider helping with children's programs at schools, sports or "organizations like the "Shriners", "Make a wish Foundation", or a support groups for patients with chronic illness, such as "National Kidney Foundation", or "American Cancer Society". There are shelters for pets and displaced men and women that also need helpers.
It's important for the elderly to exercise, eat properly and stay fit. Push your love one to get vaccinations for flue and pneumonia. Sign them up at a local gym or swim club. Managing stress is a key to longevity. The Centenarians studied, all had low stress levels, and amazing amounts of faith and gratitude. Help parents relinquish control and reduce stress by giving them inspirational/prayer books to maintain an optimistic attitude and grateful spirit. Any type of mental exercise will help combat memory impairments.
Find activities that stimulate their minds from cooking new recipes, reading books, working on crossword puzzles, playing cards, bingo, board games or playing a musical instrument. These all help to keep the mind sharp. Look into your local senior community centers that offer transportation service for lunch and activities to keep attendees motivated.
Men and women that were studied had close relationships with friends and family. When aging parents have upcoming family/friends events they have something to look forward to. When possible get them out to birthday celebrations, kids sporting events, bowling parties with friends, showers, weddings, kids parties, all which will make them feel more attached.
It's important that seniors stay connected, remain independent and not feel that they are a burden. Seniors Helping Seniors (seniorshelpingseniors.com) is a vital organization created to bring people together, aiding seniors to give and receive home services and support. Assisted Living Facilities is another option to keep your loved one living independently, with other seniors while receiving assistance with meals, laundry and medical needs.
It may not be easy for children of aging parents to keep them active. By showing them the benefits of pursing their purpose, exercising, staying connected, and helping others, Mom and Dad will be healthier, a good role model for their grandchildren and can continue to be productive citizens.
