It is difficult to fairly rate the greatest players of all time due to the changes in time and the game. I will, however, rate as fairyl as possible starting with the greatest:
1) Babe Ruth- This was a no brainer in that the Babe is in a class by himself. In the year he hit 60 home runs, that number was more than what a majority of teams hit. In addition, he retired with an incredibly high average.
2) Mark Mc Guire- Just kidding..bad joke
2) Ted Williams- The Splendid Splinter was the master of the bat, its mechanics and swing. He hit more than 500 home runs despite missing five of his prime years in the United States Marine Corps. If you add his average input during these prime years, he would have surpassed the Babe. And let us not forger that he is the last to hit .400. Getting a hit 2 out of 5 times is unimaginable today.
3) Henry Aaron- The man is incredible based on consistency and longevity alone. Excluding the controversy with the legitimacy of Barry Bonds, his total is even more increible given he never hit 50 home runs in a season.
4) Ty Cobb- Not know as the nicest man in the world, he was one of the greatest to play the game. My reasons are twofold: 1) his batting average is unprecedented and 2)so is his record with stolen bases
5) Willie Mays- The Say Hey Kid for a bit was challenged by Mickey Mantle as the premier player of his time but in time surpassed the Mick. His fielding is legendary based on his basket catche and the incredible catch of Vic Wertz drive in the World Series. His incredible accomplishments include a lifetime batting average of over 300 and also has more than 500 home runs.
6) Ken Griffey Jr- Yes, Junior is special with 600 home rins and would have more than Bonds legitimately if not for all his injuries since going to Cincinnati. In adddition, let us not forget his acrobatic plays in the outfield with his Gold Gloves. Oh yes, Senior has much to be proud of!
7) Alex Rodriquez- On the basis of statistics, this can be chalenges but when A-Rod finished he will advance in the standings. Only 32, he has already amassed ovewr 500 home runs and could hit 900 if his health allows. He is also underrated as a base stealer as he could ih so choosed steal 30-40 bases a year.
Let me say a few words about pitching. Greg Maddox is arguably the greatest pitcher of all time. His accomplishments include more legitimate wins than Roger Clemens. Incredibly, he has won 15 or more for 17 seasons and has one of the lowest walks per nine innings of any pitcher who ever lives. He won more Gold Gloves than the vast majority of players last in terms of number of years.
