The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a breed known for being all-round great dogs. They can hunt, track, pull, herd and excel in a variety of other tasks that humans have desired them to do. This greatness has lead to misunderstanding as well as a wealth of misinformation. Because of irresponsible breeders and owners this breed is frequently identified as vicious or dangerous and at least 25 breeds of dog are often called 'pit bull' because of similar characteristics.
The APBT should weigh between 20 and 55 pounds with the average being around 35-40lbs. These dogs were bred to be small yet powerful because their original purpose was in the fighting pit. Ideally they should stand between 18-25 inches at the shoulder and be well proportioned with well-defined muscle. Their wedge shaped head should also be proportionate while still conveying power and character. The APBT requires little brushing because their smooth, short coat doesn't collect dirt or become matted.
Bred for many years to exhibit NO human aggression these dogs make great pets although they are most definitely not a good candidate for first time owners or those without the time or finances to provide training, socialization and adequate containment. The APBT has dog-aggression in it's genes although that doesn't mean that they are doomed to live life as an only dog or locked away from play dates. The American Pit Bull Terrier is known for their eagerness and enthusiasm for life which makes them very trainable as long as their owner/handler is willing to keep it fun and offer them challenges.
In recent years the media has demonized these dogs in an attempt to generate profit. The APBT has suffered the weight of many myths such as the 'locking-jaw' myth and the theory that they can do more damage with a single bite than any other breed, both of which have been proven incorrect. While the APBT is very trainable and is known for it's love of children irresponsible owners have led to the widespread panic which is resulting in laws to ban this breed as well as many others who fit the 'pit bull' type classification. The responsibility of owning an American Pit Bull Terrier is immense and those who take it on lightly are bound for trouble. The experience can be great and fulfilling but if the dog has more honor than it's owner serious conflict will occur.
