I am writing to add my little voice to those of numerous writers who have written on the life and time of Tim Russert, the Washington DC bureau chief of NBC. The news of the veteran journalist's death came to most people like a thief in the night. Having worked till the last minute of his sudden death from complications associated with heart problems, gave Tim away as a workhalic. Given the fact that he died on the job is a testimony to the fact that Tim died for his first love. His time on earth was well spent considering the number of tributes paid so far from different people from all walks of life. It's not a gainsaying to state that Tim would not have asked for something different in terms of the way he exited the world.
Tim's contribution to American journalism, especially the political variety can not be overemphasized. His presence in the arena of political analysis on the forthcoming presidential election will be greatly missed. Reports say he has already mapped out his strategies for covering the election, given his expertise on the political reporting of American elections spanning decades.
As a contemporary journalist in the mold of Tom Brokaw and a host of other highly respected and experienced journalists, Tim Russert ensured the profession enjoys the regard and respect it deserves in the society. He maintained this through his unbiased and objective manner of interviewing his subjects with no intention to ridicule or embarrass them, even they exhibited or expressed different views to his on issues under discussion. Tim always expressed his preference for thorough and concise analysis with every possible means of getting this across to his audience. His interviewees somewhat left the studios more enlightened than when they got in. He had his homework properly done before camera rolled, so he was always on top of the main topic for the interview without recourse to unnecessary digression.
Journalism is a very tedious and strenous profession, and it should be treated as such. To this end, journalists are encouraged to ensure that regular and proper medical check-up is paramount in their efforts to stay alive and well. It is not enough to be a good, competent, and unbiased journalist or writer if self protection is not given proper attention. There is only one life to live, and this should be seen to be lived well as long as it lasted. Preparing for medical emergency is also of importance. Probably, Tim may be alive and well if he has paid more attention to his medical problems. But above all, we take solace in the fact that he lived a life of decent, fair and unbiased personality.
Adieu Tim, the father, the journalist and the son of "Big Russ"
