Poetry: Civil War

Clara

Be not afraid boy,
war is won for you.
It no longer matters
you wore grey or wore blue.
Be not afraid boy,
take your last breath.
I'm here by your side,
I won't leave you until death.

Be not afraid boy,
take your last breath.
I will write the letters
to tell of your death.
I will tell your mother
you won't be coming home,
and how when on your deathbed
your mind to her did rome.

I will tell your sweetheart,
who for you has so long yearned.
I'll bring tears to those eyes
where for you bright fires burned.

I will write the stories
of your children now unmade
by the force of a bullet,
the steel of a blade.

Be not afraid boy,
I'll cradle you 'till dawn
and be right at your side
when your spirit passes on.
So be not afraid boy,
take that final breath,
and I'll move to the next boy
to comfort him in death.
