Landscaping your property can add beauty, functionality and value to your outdoor area. Always use licensed contractors when completing a home improvement project. Licensed contractors are professionals. They are insured should they damage your property, they are covered by workers compensation insurance in case someone is injured during the project and they will be available should there be any future warranty issues with their work.
Consider how much maintenance you want to perform before choosing your landscape plants. Low maintenance xeriscaping using native plant species has recently become popular. This method also conserves water, a growing concern in today's world.
The fist issue to be decided is the necessity for the project. Do you want curb appeal? Perhaps you'd like to screen your property from your neighbors' for privacy or are you looking for an outdoor living area complete with an arbor and water feature in which to relax after a hard day?
Most reputable landscape companies will offer free design and estimate services tailored to your budget. Be prepared to accommodate a landscape crew during installation and realize that large trees or palms will require equipment such as Bobcats or cranes for installation. Consider an automatic irrigation system to protect your investment, many landscape companies insist upon them if they are to warranty the plant material. Realize that installation of such a system will require trenching on your property. Utilities will need to be located prior to any digging.
Landscaping is one of the few home improvements that can usually be recouped in increased property values. The immediate benefit of increased enjoyment of your outdoor areas and longer-term benefit of property appreciation are equally advantageous to the homeowner.
Some popular design options include adding annuals for seasonal color, incorporating plants which attract butterflies, adding water features or pavers and the use of native plants to reduce maintenance costs. Curbs or edging can also be added to the design to produce a more ordered look.
Remember to ask your landscape contractor for copies of their insurance certificates showing both general liability and worker's compensation coverage. Be sure to obtain lien releases for any progress payments as well as a final lien release upon being paid in full.
