Motivating employees: Is money or recognition more appreciated?

I know that I'm saying money but really it should be both. I suppose it really depends as well on the size of the company. If you work for a small company who maybe has a few employees they may not be able to afford to give you a big payrise or bonus but regocnising you contribution to the business goes a long way.

Eventually though small companies do reward their staff with a share of the profits. Sadly not every company does. It also seems the bigger the business the more insignificant you become, to them your just a name and role number. They cannot possibly know in head office if you fullfilling your potential or not and quite frankly they don't care.

In this case Money is definetly the way to go, if its a bonus scheme it should be based on the hours you work because it is so aggrevating when you've slogged your guts out helping everyone else and filling in for them only to be paid a measly sum based on your contractual hours.

Some companies will do the p.l.p scheme, performance related pay and your wages go up acording to how well you've got on in your job. They generally have a Yearly appraisel. You have goals to work to and if you achieve them you get a rise.

There will always be some big boss who waxes lyrical about how everyone in the company has a role to play and your all important and you all help the sucess of the company but what that in laymens terms means that we are quite happy for you to work all the hours under the sun and put in all the hard graft while we line our pockets and you get pittance.

Bitter? ME! No never, seriously though when I set up my own business everyone who is commited to the job and shows they not only enjoy it but that they work hard will be rewarded not only with praise and recognition but with suitable wages and bonuses as well as a night out.

When did your boss treat you all to a meal, dinner dance or day trip out? It's happened to me once. The team had got her a significant bonus and so she decided to say thanx by taking out the whole office (30 of us) for lunch, she paid for everything. Of course from then on everybody tried to out do each other in hopes of getting another long free lunch.

A friend of mine has just had two free day trips to theme parks courtesy of her husbands new job, they pay for the entrance a meal and transport. This also happens every other weekend in the summer and they also have meals in hotels and put on dances 3 times a year, no wonder no-one leaves unless they have retired.

Lets not forget that the cost of living has gone up, here they say the bills have gone up by 15% but the wages have only gone up 4% what does that tell you? business is booming but they aren't prepared to ease the pressure on us, the ones paying for it.

So in summary recognition is appreciated but money is more helpful in todays economic climate.
