Cooling systems are not only air conditioners. There are a number of ways to achieve a cooler home while conserving energy and money. Properly insulating, planting trees, installing energy-efficient windows, and using proper ventilation will keep your home cooler and save energy in most climates.
Ventilation: The easiest and most effective way to conserve energy. This can be achieved by: Ceiling fans, whole-house fans, and natural ventilation.
"Swamp Cooler": A low energy cooling system. Evaporative cooling that works well in dryer climates and can give the feeling of air conditioning.
Air Conditioner: Can be a small room cooler or a large central unit using ducts and vents to spread cool air throughout the home.
Technology has introduced designs such as absorption coolers, which use heat instead of electricity as their energy source and are increasingly popular in large homes. Also, Earth cooling tubes, which have been installed in a few hundred homes across the country.
Before beginning consult a professional contractor and address the following: Does your house have a cooling system that just needs updating? Will this unit be separate from the heating system or use a heat pump that is electric? How large will your system need to be to cool your home and will there be different zones?
The contractor should always perform a cooling load calculation to recommend proper sizing and make sure all ducts are examined for proper insulation and seal.
Remember you will have temporary inconveniences such as power outages, people in your home, and unexpected weather that may extend the project. There may be late deliveries, overtime and problems discovered during installation. You need to be prepared for (possibly) extending the amount of time and money this may take. Always consider:
Necessity:
What are the reasons for installing a cooling system?
What type of climate are you exposed to?
Will this system be used often?
What size system is needed and what are your options?
Project Time and Expenses:
How long will this take?
Can it be afforded?
When will you recoup your investment?
Will you receive a rebate?
What will be done if the time or money needed increases?
Having the proper cooling system will increase in your home's value. But you don't need to spend a tremendous amount. Installing new doors and ceiling fans can be an inexpensive way to upgrade your cooling system while increasing buyer's interest with cosmetic effects. Many of these ideas will also work to conserve energy and make your home more "green".
Remember there are benefits to upgrading or installing a cooling system. Short-term effects are comfort in hot weather, temperature control, and money saved monthly. Long-term benefits include saving money year round, conserving energy, helping the environment, and increasing the value of your home. You do not want to be responsible for losing these benefits.
Choosing and installing a cooling system that is appropriate and efficient for you house is not something you want to tackle yourself. Always contact a licensed contractor to ensure you get your money's worth or you may end up damaging your home, wasting your time and spending more money in the long run.
