To me, the summer solstice means humanity has breached the horizon. We have arrived to our annual reflection meeting with the sun. The word solstice is derived of the Latin words sol (meaning sun), and sistere (meaning to stand still). It is my personal belief that at this time, God somehow physically demonstrates that He is all powerful. He shines His light a little longer for our comfort in knowing He's there.
While gathering my thoughts on presenting this article, I asked my six year old nephew what summer meant to him. He replied, "It's hot. You get out of school, and you can play outside." Summer solstice marks the interval of preparation for humanity for a potentially burdensome season will follow.
On June 21, 2003, I was in Naval training on Lackland Airforce Base in San Antonio, Texas. I had recently graduated from basic training. I was twenty years old, and I felt optimistic about my future as a sailor.
This particular time in my life was joyful. San Antonio was beautiful. Unaided, the landscape incited my thankfulness. The period of time before the 2003 summer solstice had been despondent. I had previously all but given up on God to once again shine His light on me. This made me grievous for I deemed myself unworthy of God's grace and blessing. Nevertheless, God had arranged a successful position for me.
On June 21 the following four years, I again endured several hardships. My jubilance over the prosperity of the 2003 event had fizzled to discouragement. I found myself in isolation. I was struggling to support my family. I watched the sun "stand still" on this date for four consecutive years. I considered, "My life is mimicking this action."
On June 1, 2008, I landed a competitive job for the first time since my discharge from the Navy. I am awaiting the arrival of my first son scheduled later this year. These things have led me to optimism once more. I am diligently contributing to my community for it is my belief that blessing others stores blessings for me. I am confident that God will soon crown me worthy of receiving His favor. I anticipate God's annual presentation of greatness. June 20, 2008 will onset the splendor of summer for the northern hemisphere of Earth. The sun's apparent position will ascend to its greatest height. I will witness this occurrence with aspiration of once more accelerating my life, and achieving favor under the star which God utilizes to sustain humanity.
